Vending Misers Cut Carbon

Tufts University is one of several campuses and schools that use devices called “Vending Misers” to conserve energy associated with vending machines across campus.

There are several manufacturers of the device. For less than $170 per machine, Tufts saves almost $200 per unit and reduces CO2 emissions by 2300 lbs per unit per year. Multiplied across the 75 vending machines retrofitted so far, this is big savings for the pocket book and the environment!

Like sleep features on computers, vending misers power down the machine to conserve energy when no one is in the area while maintaining product temperatures. When lights and motors are powered down, vending machines generate less heat, using less energy to keep beverages cold.
