Ice reflects 90% of the sunlight that hits it, while darker sea water absorbs 80% of the sun’s energy. The melting of the North Pole will interfere with the planet’s natural ability to cool itself and will potentially increase risks to polar bear populations and other wildlife that depend on summer sea ice.
