India: We Won't Obstruct International Climate Progress

Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh outlined broad plans for India to reduce its carbon pollution levels, addressing the concerns of those who see the developing nation as an obstacle to an international emissions agreement.

"India, unfortunately, for some strange reason is portrayed as a stumbling block to Copenhagen," said Ramesh. "We are not going to be a deal breaker at Copenhagen."

Ramesh said India may be ready to introduce legislation mandating an "energy intensity" decline of at least 5 percent by 2020, building efficiency standards by 2012, and fuel economy standards by 2011.
