NWF President: “It’s Time for Political Leadership”

Larry Schweiger, president & CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, submitted a guest post over at the Earth Day Network’s blog with his thoughts on President Obama’s State of the Union address:

It’s time for political leadership. Forty years ago, when the first Earth Day was declared, Congress began passing important legislation that has saved countless species from extinction, protected wild places from disappearing and saved countless communities from environmental destruction. Making our planet’s health and welfare a top priority has paid huge dividends for our generation. Today we have an urgent need to pay it forward to our children and future generations.

“[I]t means passing a comprehensive energy and climate bill with incentives that will finally make clean energy the profitable kind of energy in America,” said President Obama. “[P]roviding incentives for energy efficiency and clean energy are the right thing to do for our future, because the nation that leads the clean energy economy will be the nation that leads the global economy. And America must be that nation.”

That’s a plan to keep the state of our union strong. Let’s get to work.
