As a child, my family was able to take a 3 week vacation in early June almost every year in the late 60's and early 70's. 4000 mile car camping trips were the norm, hopping and skiping form national park to national forest to Historical sites. Some of the moments I remember: The thunder rolling in and out at White Sands NP at night, an eagles nest less than 1/4 mile from the road in Yellowstone NP, a steak dinner on my 13th birthday at the Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon while on a 5 day hike, a wolf print bigger than my fist on the trail at Isle Royal, a snowball fight on July 4th in Beartooth Pass, watching the bats head out to hunt at Carlsbad and Mammoth Cave. Even more exciting and memorable was when I was able to take my kids out to experience some of these same things.

As a youngster, I used to walk Little Sugar Creek from Bella Vista, AR to the MO state line, fishing. I remember catching crawdads for bait and drifting them down into deep pockets, catching sunfish, smallmouth bass and an occasional trout that had escaped from the hatchery at Bella Vista. My grandparent's cabin is long since gone, and the golf course has taken over much of that stretch of Little Sugar. That's one reason I am dedicated to conservation issues as I begin retirement.

I grew up in the city, so I loved any chance I got to get out to parks. Spent many hours temporarily imprisoning hermit crabs in my bucket at Demarest Lloyd State Park. Then one day a cousin showed me how to fish for crabs with a string and a piece of mussel, which increased yields substantially. Luckily for the crabs, my mom had a "no crabs in the car" policy, so they all went back into the Atlantic at the end of the day.

So many memories- playing in a tree house deep in the woods (which aren't there anymore, they are now condos), being a beach bum in the summer, and sliding down Sliding Rock in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
One of my best memories, which really got me to get out and enjoy nature as an adult was swimming in the waterfalls in Ithaca, NY when I was in college.
Now, I'm hooked on hiking and backpacking.
