WATCH – NWF Calls on Obama Administration to Stop Dirty Fuels Pipeline

Today the State Department held a hearing on the proposed Keystone XL pipeline that would bring dirty tar sands fuels across six states and 2,000 miles.  The pipeline would bring the dangers of the Gulf disaster to heartland states: threatening ecosystems and property, oiling wildlife and putting lives at risk. Tar sands also have a bigger carbon footprint that traditional oil and gas, and destroy irreplaceable ecosystems in Canada where they are extracted.

NWF Vice President Jim Lyon testified at the hearing, saying:

If the Obama Administration approves the construction of Keystone XL, every day we will be importing up to 900,000 barrels of world’s dirtiest fuels—tar sands oil—from Alberta, Canada through America’s heartland to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Over 2,000 miles long, this pipeline would traverse rivers and carve across prairies, flow on top of vital aquifers, and threaten farmers, ranchers and wildlife when it leaks or breaks, as we believe it undoubtedly will.
