Tuesday Gulf Oil Disaster Updates

A quick roundup of some Gulf oil disaster news items:

  • Crews have raised the Deepwater Horizon’s massive blowout preventer to the surface, hoping it will provide clues in what caused the April 20 explosion that killed 11 workers & spilled 206 million gallons of oil
  • Fortunately it looks like no oil spill resulted from last week’s oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. But as the Associated Press reports, the company that operates the rig opposed a proposed federal rule last year that would require offshore oil & gas operators to have safety systems aimed at reducing workers’ mistakes.
  • The latest Gulf oil rig explosion is a reminder that oil disasters are far from rare. As a National Wildlife Federation report this summer showed, oil disasters are tragically common.
