I agree with Kim Martinez article…my children spent most of
their time outdoors…we camped, spent time at the beach and had
outdoor play equipment…whenever I babysit for my grandchildren, I like
to spend time with them outside…

This is a subject that needs more exposure. Childhood obesity is an epidemic in the US. In addition, the secondary effects of this indoor play are often not discussed. Decreases in Vitamin D and the negative impact of video games on social skills are two areas that are deficits on the rise. If we can get more kids out in nature maybe they would begin to appreciate the need to take care of it as well. Kudos to Kim for keeping this issue on the front burner.

Being a teacher of fourth graders I absolutely agree on all points and I am glad to see a movement to get kids back outside playing and being active!

awesome Kim~! SO what you should be doing… and just for the record… Kyah and I spent waaaay more than 7 minutes out in the jacuzzi and running around the neighborhood with friends tonight! Go girl… encourage the families to take it outside!!

With so many cut backs in Education and resources being depleted, it is encouraging to read a piece that supports physical activity, living a balanced life and celebrating the “play outside” mentality! We need more information and research, like Kim’s, to be shared and investigated at many levels in our Educational system, as well as, in parenting circles.

As a mother to a young child, it is vitally important that I raise my son to appreciate nature and the outdoors while protecting him from the epidemic of childhood obsesity. The statistics in this article are staggering and help to raise awareness of a very real and growing problem that only parents can help to change and overcome in our generation. I applaud and support the National Wildlife Foundation and Kim Martinez for helping our children stay healthy and enjoy the great outdoors!
