This is so fantastic. How did I not know about it? I could not agree more. I have such great memories of playing outside--with other kids and by myself--bike-riding, tree-climbing, making forts, pretending the neighborhood was a little village, exploring the woods (even though there was a Superfund site just steps away, which is odd, looking back). It drives me crazy that kids don't play outside anymore--don't "play" much at all--and that we parents are always so involved in every little activity. I keep thinking about all the reasons that have led to this (electronics obviously, achievement-anxiety, parents over-booked and over-booking kids, fears of abduction (totally inflated--no more dangerous now than in the 70s). BTW, have you seen Free-Range Kids? Great blog also. Thx -- will check back.
