I once had a chipmunk in my home who played dead. I chased it for hours, and eventually found it hiding inside my sofa bed. When I unfolded the bed to try to retrieve it, I found the poor little creature lying completely still, mouth open, eyes shut, limbs outstretched and looking very, very dead. Saddened and sure that I had somehow killed it, I picked it up, placed it gently in a shoe box and covered it with a few paper towels before taking it outside to give it a proper burial (I'm sentimental-can't help myself.) Once outside, I put the box on the patio and was reaching over to close screen door when out of the corner of my eye I saw a tiny bit of movement under the towel... I quickly lifted a corner to see what was going on and the chipmunk suddenly lifted its head, looked around and ran for cover before I could even blink an eye.
