Wow, that is just so sad. I had both recess outdoors EVERY day, even in the middle of winter, on a huge playground (literally like 5 acres, no joke) with several large old oak trees that had beautiful roots to crawl around in, and also spent all spring and fall outside for thrice-weekly gym classes. And that was on top of hours spent roaming the woods behind my house, biking on the dirt roads where I lived with my friends, horseback riding and generally being outside at all times, playing games. We even used to read outside until we couldn't see anymore because it was so dark - my friends and I were big readers. And this was an hour north of NYC only 15-20 years ago (and thankfully, my town is the exact same even now, gorgeous place). What a huge bummer for those kids, they will never know that they are missing a whole beautiful part of the world.
