[...] keystone xl…the once environmentally friendly Canada wants to do what?? Posted on May 12, 2012 | Leave a comment keyyystone…no not the beer. the 2000 mile pipeline being fought for by big oil friends in the house of representatives that would run from Alberta, Canada through 6 states worth of Amurican farmland and wildlife preserves to the gulf, carrying 900,000 barrels of crude tar sands oil a DAY. the impact of this? the extinction of caribou herds in Alberta, the poisoning and killing of wolves in a ridiculous effort to save the caribou, and destruction of other wildlife habitats. the proposed route includes an active seismic zone (dumb as f) that had a 4.3 magnitude earthquake in 2002 and the 6 million year old Ogallala aquifer that provides drinking water to 8 western states and 30% of the nation’s water for agriculture irrigation of America’s “breadbasket” region. even oil economists are rejecting this idea because the majority of the tar sands crude oil refined in the gulf will be sold to china and would never reach American gas tanks. TransCanada, the company in line for this exciting business venture, will profit at America’s expense, and they’ll do it tax-free. ..huh? so what is the point of this? someone has the potential to make a biggg profit. such individuals may even be conveniently seated as elected officials promoting the issue under the guise of ‘job creation.’ those clever congressmen, taking the transportation bill hostage and tacking on this one little amendment. come-on senate what’s wrong with you! you and the president are getting in the way of progress, ‘job-creators!’ funny thing is, the 2500-5000 construction jobs (which in a 2011 press release was inflated to 20,000) added to the us economy for work on the pipeline doesn’t come close to the number of workers that will be displaced by this construction project, either directly or as a result of the $4 billion dollar federal subsidies –US money, not Canadian. and we can add the cost of clean-up if they pull a BP. (remember that?) not everything carries a pricetag, however, like the contamination of one of the world’s largest aquifers (Ogallala). the result of this would be, well, devastating. and there’s no ocean current or global weather phenomena to help with remediation; a contaminated aquifer remains a contaminated aquifer. aquifers depend on the hydrological cycle for replenishment which is a natural process that takes decades. for an example of potential environmental impact we need not look further than another Canadian tar sands company, Enbridge. in 2010 one of the company’s pipelines burst releasing 840,000 gallons of tar sands crude oil in to the Kalamazoo River (which feeds into Lake Michigan), coating wildlife, contaminating marshlands, private property and farm land. the company had been previously cited in 2007 for safety violations that resulted in a pipeline explosion that killed 2 employees. Enbridge has been responsible for hundreds of spills in the last DECADE. if this is a representation of Canadian tar sands operations..i certainly don’t want it running through 2000 miles of US land. the environmental risks far outweigh any benefits from the construction of the keystone xl pipeline. what’s more, Americans would be the last to see any kind of reward (if any) for putting their nation’s precious resources in the hands of big oil. outlandish! an oil pipeline running through the heart of America that is not intended for American use!? our wildlife, our food, our drinking water, America’s aesthetic beauty…no! tell them they can’t have it! so let me get this straight, TransCanada. you want unimpeded access to America from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico for transportation of your toxic tar sands oil and you want us to pay for it…? if this ain’t the dumbest, shadiest, most profit driven, politics-in-bed-with-business project I’ve ever seen.. i must have forgotten about the Bush administration’s love affair with Halliburton and Goldman-Sachs. Keystone xl would, in no way, benefit the US. unless of course you happen to be an big oil shareholding elected official who has the influence to see the approval of this project through.. keystone has already been rejected by the Obama administration once…it is up for re-consideration NOW (submitted 5/4/12) and was added in the Transportation bill by the House. the company expects to start building in 2013 (upon approval). voice your opinion to Congress!! you can have more of an impact than you think…it worked the first time. check.it.out.
