That's awesome! I remember a few nature adventures when I was 15 (hiking the West Coast trail, kayaking the Juan de Fuca Strait) that were not relaxing for my mom, but she was always supportive. I only hope that I, and parents of my generation, will continue to teach our children that comfort in nature. It builds to when they are becoming adults and need to find their own way. I only hope my children and their generation will value the experience of exploring a new eco-systems or sleeping under the stars. It may have taken 100 simple moments where we slept in the backyard or had a picnic by a brook, but when they push themselves and do something great, that will be a good moment to be a mom.

Wonderful post, Carla! Thanks for conjuring up so many memories of my mom & the countless introductions to Nature she made for me. One that stands out is her decision to let me and five friends take an eight-day wilderness canoe trip by ourselves in MN's fabulous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness -- at age 15. She made sure we knew our stuff, but then stepped back and let go. I'm not sure I would have taken the same leap of faith had I been in her shoes.
Here's to Nature mothers everywhere!

So many little things! My mom used to always pick up trash when we went on walks. It embarrassed me a little when I was teen, but now I find myself doing the same thing and picking up along sidwalks, in parks. Gotta take care of mother nature! My mama taught me that:)
