Burning of fossil fuels definitely needs to be significantly reduced but so does incineration of organic fuels, such as "biomass" (wood, grasses, etc). In fact, biomass incineration emits 1.5 times as much carbon dioxide as coal. Along with the CO2 and other noxious gases, ultra-fine particulate matter that cannot be filtered by any pollution control devices currently available and more noxious gases are also emitted. Your post is great and thank-you for publishing it but focusing only on fossil fuels tends to support the belief that organic fuels (usually getting the prefix "bio") are a better fuel source. They are, in many important ways, not. Use of combustion-free energy sources like solar, wind, tide and geothermal are indeed what we should be focusing on - http://www.energyjustice.net

Are we serious? Then we have to get rid of the people responsible for GW denial. The public is not energized on this because of the campaign of media confusion. That means the funders of the think tanks and that means capitalism itself. Capitalism requires the growth that kills.

That means shutting down the biggest polluting entity on the planet, the Pentagon. It, itself, is the biggest burner of oil. It is necessary to dissolve the military. That means giving up on empire and that means becoming a self sufficient nation.

Only the super rich will suffer.

Start with getting rid of the cars, then crank back on the electricity 'production'. Reform agriculture, ditch 'agri-business and you're fixed. Our economy monetizes resource waste, that is its purpose. A handful of billionaires and millionaire are rewarded, the rest of us get to pick up the tab.

Time to invent 'Economy 2.0' that monetizes conservation instead of waste.
