An excellent post that shows BP is certainly making it easy to pile on BP, and deservedly so. But it's far too easy for us -- and industry, and government -- to simply focus on painting BP as a rogue company that was (stupider, more risk-taking, greedier, whatever your preferred adjective) than their peers in the offshore oil production industry. It's lazy to just slap BP hard, congratulate ourselves for doing right by the people in the Gulf region, and blithely move ahead with offshore oil development as before: paying no attention to offshore drilling technology, oversight, safety and enforcement until the NEXT inevitable major accident. What I hope this trial reveals: Were BP's decisions and actions egregiously out of bounds, or were they more or less common practice among the companies that drill in our waters? Was BP really any worse than Shell and Exxon and Petrobras and Anadarko, or were they just unluckier in 2010? That's a much harder question to answer, but if we do that difficult work now, it could positively shape energy policy and offshore lands management for years to come.
