Thanks for your comments, David! It sounds like you are single-handedly greening Detroit! Did you hear about the Climate Action Plan that is being developed, led by Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice? I'm happy to send you some more information. You should also take a look at NWF's on-line resources, like for our Certified Wildlife Habitat Program (which includes resources for building schoolyard habitats): http://www.nwf.org/Home/How-to-Help/Garden-for-Wildlife.aspx

Great post Kara!!! I live in the city of Detroit and love my house my yard and my city. I have started a permaculture garden when my partner and I moved in last May. This coming season we have great plans to incorperate many new additions: i.e. Bat House, Mason Bee Hive. In years to come a koi pond. However, I would really like to do more in the community like start urban gardens in the vacant lots in my neighborhood. Also would enjoy encouraging the local schools to start classroom gardens in some of the vacant lots. If you have any suggestions on how I might go about starting this Urban Eco Project please let me know. Thank You David
