Photos of Wildlife Across America

This week, I returned from a road trip vacation across America, driving from Boston to my home outside Yosemite, California. I visited four national parks, and spent an extended period in Yellowstone, where I worked for three years. During my trip, I encountered an array of amazing wildlife, from discovering a robin’s nest in upstate New York, to swimming (a bit panicked) in a lake with a water snake in Missouri, to watching newly born bison calves with their distinct orange coats frolic in meadows in Yellowstone.

I wanted to share some of my favorite photos from these encounters:

At the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in Yellowstone National Park, I watched an osprey pair fly in and out of their nest on a rocky ledge.

In Badlands National Park in South Dakota, a herd of bighorn sheep performed their elegant, rock-climbing ballet.

On the Beartooth Highway in Montana, deemed “the most beautiful road in America,” a herd of mountain goats foraged for food exposed by the newly melted snow.

At Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, a great horned owlet emerged from the nest to consider a herd of elk grazing nearby.

Napping Bison
A napping bison in Yellowstone National Park had almost shed its heavy winter coat.

A pair of pronghorn
A pronghorn pair in Grand Teton National Park grazed among the spring wildflowers.

Elk calf
At West Thumb Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, an elk calf smiled for the camera.
