EPA: $17 Million in Grants for Projects on Climate and Air/Water Quality

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it is awarding nearly $17 million in grants to universities nationwide to study the effects of global warming on air and water quality.

"EPA is engaging the academic research community, through these grants, to enable solutions that will both adapt to and mitigate the impact of climate change," said Dr. Paul T. Anastas, assistant administrator for the Office of Research and Development.

The grants, which will be awarded as part of the Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, will go to projects on climate change's connection and/or four solicited areas: allergies, air quality, water resources, and carbon sequestration.

The STAR program funds research grants and fellowships and "engages the nation's best scientists and engineers in targeted research that complements EPA's own outstanding intramural research program and those of our partners in other federal agencies."
