And if you were one of the thousands that tuned in faithfully to the Iowa Bald Eagle nest this past spring, you may be ready for a new nest-cam fix.

You’re in luck! Spring started September 1 in South Africa — and a beautiful spotted eagle owl decided to start a family in a potted plant on a couple’s balcony in Johannesburg. Mother’s name = Potted Plant Owl or PPO. Pop the popcorn! (Sorry about the ad. I promise it’s worth it!)

Facts About the Spotted Eagle Owl:

  • Range: Lives in Africa, south of the equator, and in some parts of the Arabian peninsula.
  • Wingspan: 39-55 inches
  • Call: Hear what a spotted eagle owl sounds like.
  • Relatives: This owl is related to the Great Horned Owl of North America
  • Breeding: They mate for life!
