Congress Failed Arctic Wildlife

Yesterday, a majority in Congress voted to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s Coastal Plain to mandated oil and gas drilling. This is a spectacular but fragile ecosystem, a place often referred to as ‘America’s Last Great Wilderness,’ and home to polar bears, caribou, musk oxen and many other kinds of wildlife. The National Wildlife Federation condemns this passage of the tax reform bill that includes the provision for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. You may be asking yourself what drilling in the Arctic Refuge has to do with taxes – how did the tax bill end up requiring lease sales that could forever devastate caribou migration grounds and polar bear denning habitat?
Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) introduced legislation that mandates oil and gas lease sales in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s Coastal Plain and the legislation ultimately was approved as a provision in the final tax bill.
