Watch: Restoring Wild Bison

Celebrate the survival of America’s wild bison and learn what we can do to keep our national mammal coming back strong:

Our prairies once thundered with the sound of millions of mighty bison hooves. But, by the 1880s, only 100 bison remained in the entire country, near Yellowstone National Park.

After decades of heroic conservation work, America’s magnificent wild bison are beginning to bounce back… but not as fast as they could. Currently, bison are struggling to recover due to the population cap in Yellowstone which is causing some bison to be rounded up and culled. The National Wildlife Federation is working to increase this cap and to help relocate hundreds more wild bison to their natural prairie landscape.
