Eagle Cam: Iowa Bald Eagle Eggs Hatching Live

from Wildlife Promise

Update: Read an interview with the “father” of the Decorah Eagle Nest Cam.

The Decorah eagles have left the nest! Thank you Raptor Resource Project for hosting a wonderful wildlife connection for millions around the world! Tune back in next spring!

The Raptor Resource Project brings you the Decorah Eagles from atop their tree at the fish hatchery in Decorah, Iowa. Watch the eagles hatch and grow!

First hatch: April 2, 2011
Second hatch: April 3, 2011
Third hatch: April 6, 2011

Speak Up for Bald Eagles and Other Wildlife

After nearly disappearing from most of the United States decades ago, the bald eagle is now flourishing — a national success story and a testament to the vital role of conservation laws. Sadly, right now, a stealth attack is being made on many of our nation’s most important wildlife conservation laws, including the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and Clean Air Act.

TAKE ACTION: Stop the Stealth Attack on Wildlife >>

Who operates and maintains this eagle cam?

The Raptor Resource Project maintains the cams, of which there are two. The feed is streamed online 24/7. Both are positioned on one of the nest’s supporting limbs about 4-5 feet above the nest. The main cam is automated and is trained on the nest. The other cam has pan-tilt-zoom capabilities. At dark the main cam switches to infrared (invisible to the eagles) night-time view. Watch this slide show of the eagle cam installation in fall 2010 >>

More Frequently Asked Questions About the Eagle Cam

See these frequently asked questions answered by the Raptor Resource Center:

How high is the nest?
About 80 feet.

How big is the nest?
5-6 feet across, about the same deep; it weighs about 1½ tons.

How old is the nest?
The eagles built it in 2007. A previous nest close by fell when a windstorm broke one of the branches.

Are these eagles banded?
No.

Which is the male and which is the female?
It is hard to tell the difference unless they are both on the nest. The female is larger than the male. This female has a ridge above her eyes that goes further back than on the male, and her eyes are surrounded by a greyish shadow; the male has a line around his eyes that makes them look “beadier.” Some think that the male’s head is “sleeker” than the female’s.

What is the history of this pair?
They have been together since the winter of 2007-2008. Her markings at that time indicated that she was about 4 years old. They successfully hatched and fledged 2 eaglets in 2008, then 3 in 2009, and 3 more in 2010.

When were the eggs laid in 2010, and when did they hatch?
First egg was February 25, second on February 28, third on March 5. First hatch was April 3, second on April 6, third on April 9. All three eaglets fledged and are now on the wing but are not being tracked.

What is the area around the nest like?
The nest is in a cottonwood tree on private property near the Decorah Fish Hatchery (operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources), on the banks of the babbling waters of Trout Run in extreme northeast Iowa.

Where can I see pictures and videos of these eagles?
The Raptor Resource Project provides an archive of daily views of the nest over the immediate 24-hour period, taken every 2 minutes. Click on Eagle Dailies.

Who does the panning, tilting, and zooming, and when does that happen?
Bob Anderson, Executive Director of Raptor Resource Project, switches to the pan-tilt-zoom cam when time and weather permit, and especially when there appears to be interesting activity in the nest.

What is the Raptor Resource Project?
Established in 1988, the non-profit Raptor Resource Project specializes in the preservation of falcons, eagles, ospreys, hawks, and owls. They establish and strengthen breeding populations of these raptors by creating, improving, and maintaining nests and nest sites. In addition to directly managing more than 23 falcon, eagle, and owl nest sites, the Raptor Resource Center provides training in nest site creation and management across the United States, reaching more than 85,000 people each year through lectures, education programs, and the web, and develop innovations in nest site management and viewing that bring people closer to the world around them. Check out the links to cams of many of the raptor nests that RRP manages.

Update from the Raptor Resource Center: RRP’s local computer is experiencing the issue, so Ustream is giving VIP Tech Support to assist Bob and his team at this very moment. Thanks for your support, and we’re happy for this community love!

Technical difficulties are keeping both the cam feed and the chat room offline right now. Go to another web site, hosted by Xcel Energy, to see the eagles live (without audio):

http://birdcam.xcelenergy.com/eagle.html (Not sure if this is working either)

Otherwise, hopefully they will get the cam feed fixed soon!

turn it back on stop teasing us.

  • Daveh

Question: The picture is very still, what type, brand camera are you using and how is it secured?
    Dave H Bergen, NY

  • Cammy

It appears that only one eaglet is being fed. Is there a time frame from hatching to feeding?

  • Lela

So beautiful. I don’t want to do anything else today but watch over and pray for this family of beauties! – Lela

  • TulaneMom2011

How amazing, she is feeding. Does she seem to be favoring one eaglet?

  • Deb

Thank you for letting us be a part of this. This is so beautiful.

  • Abby Benson

    did all 3 hatch yet?
    or just the 2 still?

  • Chefmicheleky

Is the new eaglet alive? I can see one of them is but the other looks dead. I hope not!!!

  • Dogzatfeet

It appears maybe the third eaglet died…? The parent was trying to move it around awhile ago and it seemed lifeless…

  • Suzanne

This is awesome. Thanks so much.

  • Jodi

How come the baby eagle isn’t under the mom like the other one is?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brittany-Miller/500624946 Brittany Miller

oh no! Baby off to the side!

  • Mskaydee

so there is one egg left that appears to be no thatched yet. One adult eagle keeps sitting on one, and for some reason a few minutes earlier today one of the adult eagles flung one off to the side but it is alive ::shrugs::

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brittany-Miller/500624946 Brittany Miller

YAY!!!!! After dad pushed him out mom came back and pushed him back in!!!!

  • Anonymous

The second one hatched about 7:45am EST 4/3/11

Does anyone know why the male eagle flung the one chick out from under him and then ignored him for well over 30 minutes and then finally the female allowed it to go back under her?
Is this normal? Weaker one out? ?

  • Anonymous

No Kidding! Amazing. I liked where they talked to each other on the changing of the guard!

  • Lisa

seems like the one thrown out is actually the stronger one, im confused as to why he did that! I am a little worried about the second eaglet, he seems to be very weak and wont eat, i hope he will be ok

  • ndnzfan

This is awesome!!!!! Just watch for a little while

  • srcarrvt

love the curbside service… rabbit on a stick :)

  • Sdrmasonry

    is that eaglet dead?

  • Bob

watch out as they get older, in another live cam, all was going well until small animals (read kitten) showed up for lunch.

  • Sdrmasonry

    oh its a rabbit

  • srcarrvt

good thinking… surf & turf …. who does’nt like crow LOL

  • srcarrvt

aww.. gives new meaning to ” here kitty, kitty ” sad, but that’s nature…

  • Laadyb

Wow, what wonderful providers. A fresh rabbit, fish and an old crow or blackbird that’s been dead for awhile. And now #3 is working its way out of its shell.

  • Jecar003

My 1st graders are going to love watching this tomorrow!

  • Gen4G22

You can see people stopping on the road and getting out…I wonder if this is private property and the owner can keep them away. This is totally awesome!! It will be really neat to watch these baby eagles grow up. Thanks again.

  • srcarrvt

yes, this is private property – the river is known as Trout Run and the farm on the property has a few horses….

  • Tmess223

How long will the male stay away? He has been gone an hour I am a little worried. Does any one with knowledge answer these questions?

  • srcarrvt

YEAH !!! there are @ eaglets!!
    Hot Dog!

  • srcarrvt

    * 2 * sorry

  • srcarrvt

if only we all had the chance to be as protective of the ones we have created…
or had the opportunity…. they would indeed soar on the wings of an eagle.

  • dankes

i can’t believe I have spent the entire watching these magnificent animals. My family thinks I am nuts..but I am mesmerized

  • SER

I just got back on and something doesn’t look right. Is there a problem with one of the eagles?

  • Tmess223

The male brought her a black bird,, But he has been gone over an hour is that normal?

  • Bjh13

watching on and off all day…where did the dead bird come from?

  • Robea003

Is the second hatchling okay? I haven’t watched for awhile.

  • Lisa

  • Gaffney Sean

Flying skies of fortune – each our separate way
On the wings of maybe – downy birds of prey
Kind of makes me feel sometimes, didn’t have to go
But as the eagle leaves the nest it’s got so far to go We are eagles of one nest – the nest is in our soul

  • Rebekah

what kind of night light is that and I am concerened of disrupting their sleep and night vision. P.S. my husband and I feel like new parents watching this!

  • VvHstar

I hope this incredibly perceptive bird is not bothered by the Infra Red and the nasty hum of the communication equipment.

  • Judahthedog

We have this full screen on our laptop in the living room running 24/7. It’s all eagles, all the time. If these eagles only knew there are currently over 70,000 people staring at it as it sits in a nest, 80 feet in the air in a small Iowa town.

  • J Wikstrom

The humming is from your computer speaker which you can turn down. Place the cursor at the indicator of a speaker, which is in the lower right portion of the box next to maximize. This will end your buzzing noise. I am sure that the eagles do not hear what you hear.
Above all, great videos on the Bald Eagles!

  • Rv5andrews

God so loved the world that he gave us a webcam in Iowa to enjoy his magnificent work!

  • J. Wikstrom

I want to ask about what happened after 6:00 P.M. 04/03/11. There seems to be alot of eagle feathers in front of the eagle on the nest. What gives?

  • Rv5andrews

    Females are larger then males

  • Rv5andrews

  • Rebekah

the dead bird was brought in by one of the eagles for food. A fish was also brought to the nest.

  • Zwdb08wdb

This is incrediable to watch . These are truly amazing birds. Thanks for sharing this.

i was wondering How does the camera batteries recharge ? Are they wired or plugged in to a nearby building ?

I always wondered what the view was like from an eagle nest -pretty amazing as i figured it would be.. this is really cool, and educational for the whole family. everyone should watch .

  • Hazelnutz69

this is really cool! thanks for letting us watch..

  • Halfhour

Do we know why the 3rd. hasn’t hatched yet. Was it laid at the same time or later? Incredable been watching them for 2 days.

  • Ajd

Why is the Mama not letting the baby bird back up under her?

  • Bjwaite

I think the baby is getting a “time out” because it attacked the mama while it was being feed! :) I know, they’re not human but really, that baby is very aggressive!!!

  • Halfhour

Do we know why the 3rd . chick hasn’t hatched yet.? Was it laid on a different day?

  • Pam

What happpened to the baby? I left for a minute and poof… Did she get back under her wing?

  • Olekszyk

Did that little one find his way back to his mother?

  • Guest

The baby was attacking her mother (or father) a few minutes ago, then, the mother (or father) flung her away accidentally. But, they weren’t really doing much, so, I went to a different screen. When I came back, the baby wasn’t there. Did she/he get back to its parent?

  • Heather

That car on the road is creeping the mom/dad out…. I wonder what’s going on.

    Pretty windy out there.

the father was trying to feed the baby and baby pecked at his eye so he flung it out of the way he looked like he was scolding her He made it stay out for about 5 min then it came closer to him and he nudged her back in. very hard and funny to watch the whole thing. I thought he through her out of nest. but flung just a little ways away

  • Hydrolo

well this is what i have seen come in rabbit, fish, blackbird muskrat and just a few minutes ago another fish

I had asked the question earlier, “Why the Mama bird was not letting one of the baby birds back up under her?” Well all went well. After about 10 minutes or so the Mama bird was protecting her baby once again. I am so enjoying nature at its best.

  • Abc

    i have a big quiestiom

I truely hope you people will take a couple of second and fill it out. It is very short. The number of people that submit really do make the differance:)

  • Irelandvc

An owl seems to have the parents upset!!! Dad left to go investigate and now I don’t hear the owl.

  • Irelandvc

The video is not working but I hear sound. I hope the camera is not damaged.

  • Jesse5500

    No video

  • Mrsdryden12152

what a great experience for my day care kids. We check on them all the time. I have it running all the time on my laptop. It is so amazing to see the food that they bring to the nest. The babies are so cute and now we see fighting among the little ones. Is the other egg going to hatch and if it does not, what do the big birds do with it, or does it just dry up.

  • AcctProfessor

I am bummed as well. The video is still not working.

  • heart 1

I wake up during the middle of the night and have to see what is going on. Can’t seem to
let it go and try to get everyone I know get involved with the proccess of the magic of
this event. Will look forward to the same thing next year.

  • Pam

Oh My… Did you all see that? The egg is beginning to crack… AMAZING.

  • tm

WOW. way to point out all the positive! sheesh.

  • Hlhamp1

last egg should hatch about april 12th it took the other two 37 days

  • Hlhamp1

I would like to thank you folks at RRP for letting us share this experience the camera couldnt have been placed any better. I am 71 and never ever dreamed i would see this .I have watched them in the woods and love to watch them fish. I cant imagine why anyone would want to kill them

  • Irelandvc

Will the older chicks hurt the newcomer when he finally arrives????

  • imspncycl

I think the bigger older chick is going to kill and eat the remaining chick and any other hatchiling. It is scary and demoralizing to watch this.

  • Chefstu52

? Has the male eagle disappeared? Feel sorry for the female she’s been on the nest a long time.

  • Chuck

    The vidio cam isnt working!

  • Mrsdryden12152

so far I have seen a muskrat, crow, fish and rabbit brought to the nest. Very interesting variety of food.

  • Guest

    It keeps on freezing!

  • Clark Sally18

You couldn’t believe how much I HATE reality shows on TV, but I am addicted to the reality of the eagles doing what they have done for thousands of years. I’m loving itl. Whenever I got up last night coughing with my cold, I had to come out to the computer and look on screen and see what they were doing.

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Has anyone seen Dad since Tuesday evening? I’m watching about 10 hours a day (yes, it’s an addiction!) but haven’t seen “Edgar” (yes, I’ve named them!) and I’m getting worried for Molly!

  • Caroll29

I have seen both mom & Dad in the nest at the same time today. He has not flown the coop!!

  • Gossewya000

i want to see the 3ed egg hatch and alot of people say its dead

  • Gossewya000

i have watched this to long

  • Steve Gyetko

Bald Eagles generally mate for life, much the same as Parrots and Canada Goose. Sweet, huh? So much we could learn from them. They don’t have kids until they’re prepared, either. My wife and I have a saying around our place. “If it’s got feathers, it’s a groove”.

  • Maryjphillips

    Did the third egg hatch?

  • CMA

My children and I are mesmerized. Watching your beautiful birds from northwestern New York State

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

I can’t get it to open on my SmartPhone, if that’s what you’re using. Only my lap or desktop can pick up the stream.

  • David

The male was on the nest, last night, and has been, every time I’ve looked, today. I hope nothing’s happened to the female.

  • Gailstevenson

Is the male ever seen at the nest

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

I’m confused…isn’t that Molly (female) on the nest right now?

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

The 3rd egg is hatching NOW! So cool!

I hope the motorcycles out with the nice weather don’t disturb them. That is the one down side to the wonderful the Iowa spring time. What does a vacuum and a motorcycle have in common? They both suck and they both have dirt bags riding on them.

  • http://savemalibulagoon.com Malibanne

I’ve had it on for several days. In that time here’s what they’ve been eating: a bunny rabbit, a crow, a muskrat, a little bird that appeared to be a swallow or a finch of some sort — maybe a barn finch — and a medium-small trout. Not bad. Did I leave anything out? Sometimes I see bones there. I’ve seen dad fly in and out, and sit on the nest, but never seen either mom or dad bring food. When does that happen? At night? That is what I want to see. I’m assuming it isn’t alive when it arrives. I also never see either parent clean the nest. Somehow, in the morning, bunny is gone but crow is there instead. What happens to bunny bones?

  • http://savemalibulagoon.com Malibanne

Muskrat, bunny, trout, crow, sparrow (or finch?)

  • Greerfam1

    WOW

  • Djguenin

Earlier today I saw that the 3rd egg was partially open. And just recently, when one of the parents was feeding it appeared as if the 3rd eagle chick was dead. I am hoping that it was only sleeping, but it appeared motionless.

  • Gatehousesandy

Is it the mommy or the daddy on th nest now?

  • Barb

Just came on couldnt wait to get here….Has the # 3 egg hatched yet

  • Greerfam1

hope you are seeing this one>its hatching how. some beautiful!!!!!!!

  • Tmess223

  • Lilmissactress97

  • barbara

Funny — I was just going to post the same thing, marcie. Watching the sleeping eagle makes me feel peaceful and relaxed, too.

  • Cindy

Do they call out to each other ?? could have swore after she called out heard the male call back to her.

  • Guy

He dropped off the fish earlier this evening and then left again.

  • Guy

    What time did that happen?

  • Lv Olson

I saw it start to hatch about 5PM on Wen. The egg was cracked and moving but then the eagle sat back down on it and wiggled around like she does some time. I also saw the last fish delivered to the nest. they really have their work cut out for them and doing such a good job of it too.

I saw Mom fixing the nest last night before she went to sleep. She piled stuff up high around the edges to shape them more like the sides of a bowl on a dish. Then junior tried to crawl out from under her belly and he messed things up, so she had to repair it where he had damaged it. She did not throw away any old fur, feathers, or bones from any of the carcasses though. They are still in the “pantry” at the left front side, which is usually out of range of the camera.

What is Mama Eagle doing when she chirps a long monologue, very loudly, with her bill wide open so that you can see her tongue, and then she throws her neck forward so that her head is looking back (almost at her tail), and she emits a long chortle? She seems to do this out of the blue.
Is she calling Daddy? He doesn’t come after that call, that I have been able to see.

  • Rob1ns

    He’s such a good daddy

  • Bcreech

Thank you for sharing. This is totally awesome.

  • Wfoster64

    I love watching them…

  • Judyrum210

How old will the eaglets be when they learn to fly?

  • Troyostrom

wait did the 3rd egg hatch

  • http://savemalibulagoon.com Malibanne

    yes yes yes

  • http://savemalibulagoon.com Malibanne

It looks like there is new prey in the nest…something furry. Anyone see what it is?
I’m keeping track of their diet. So far: 1 rabbit, 1 muskrat, 3 fish, 1 crow, 1 small bird resembling a finch or sparrow, and now this new brown furry thing. Maybe another rabbit or muskrat? The muskrat had claws. I never see what happens to the bones, feathers and fur though. i guess they just pile up . . . there do seem to be some stripped bones scattered around up there.

  • http://savemalibulagoon.com Malibanne

  • mrslove

thanks so much to whoever is running this…..my girls (9 and 7) and I have been glued to this all day…..who says homeschooling isn’t fun?? I sense some eagle science study coming on!

The more aggressive the baby the better chance it has for making it. Mor.e food ,more chance to live

  • Kep17500

I have been to the National Eagle Center in Wabash,Mn. The chicks are able to “shot the poo” at least 6 feet. They tip forward and “look out below”. Don’t belive that, check ot the NEC website. Very INTERESTING.

  • Jesse5500

whats up with the camra today? weird placements

  • Kep17500

At the National Eagle Center in Wabash,Mn, You find out many interesting facts about these wonderful birds. Mom does not clean the nest. The chick is able to lean forward and “shoots the poo” over the edge of the nest. Look out below. Don’t belive it? Go to the NEC website and learn more. Also, can spot a rabbit THREE miles away.

  • Hydrolo

Yes she is calling him for his turn sometimes she will leave before he gets there but I can hear him in the distance. He also does the same thing when he is ready to hunt or go to the bathroom

  • Floydandbetty

This is amazing and I feel blessed to be watching. I have my grandson who is 9, watching this for
for 1 hour a day and he is documenting events. This is a project he truly enjoys.

  • Celestialverna

WE KNOW THAT THOSE ARE GOD DAMN FEATHERS!!!!!!

  • fitz

Does anyone know what happens to the other eagle at night? I watched til late last night and the dad was asleep on the nest. Does any one know if the other eagle is close by sleeping?

  • KaitlynnCarter

    Ithink there so cuet

  • Bricrss

I think 1 should be name fluffy

  • S Bucci

Don’t the eaglets remind you of bobbleheads

  • Guest

    @fitz
I think the other one is on a branch nearby, keeping watch.

  • JJVine

This is sooooo cool. Way to go Raptor Resource Project. This needs to somehow be communated widely. Any idea what the parents have been feeding the fledgings?

I hear an airplane going over at the moment (or a truck on a distant highway?)

  • Judyrum210

I think that the orgainzation Raptor Resource Project deserves some type of scholar award or Pulitzer for this or some type of media award. This has brought those who are suffering from the economy hope, education and the knowledge that life is special and humans can even relate to the Bald Eagle.
This has made me and thousands of others feel connected to our wildlife and from this we can see what each life purpose is no matter what species we are.

  • Dpours64

Just an amazing experience. My family has been watching them around the clock. Nature its a beautiful thing. Yeah we a officially “Bird Nerds” LOL to all our family and friends

It seems to me that the eaglets are being fed more often now — there were a few feedings early this evening. So cool to watch how the parent eagles feed them. I saw one of them land on the nest with a fish earlier in the evening, and I think that’s what they’ve been eating.

  • colette

Does Papa ever give moma eagle a break and sit with the babies for a bit?

  • colette

    I think it’s just fine………….but they aren’t MY babies! It’s amazing!!!!!!!!

  • Betsyburton

I absolutely love watching the eagles and eaglets, but can the camera light be turned off at night so that they can get a good night’s sleep?

  • Sabercat600

This is mesmerizing. I first tuned in on 4/4 with two babies and one egg yet to hatch. I just happend to tune in on 4/6 minutes before the third egg hatched & saw it as it was happening. I’ve seen mama eagle drop off fish, daddy eagle feeding the babies & fluff the nest, etc. It is so amazing to see these two be so incredibly gentle while feeding. I live in Alaska and see eagles daily. Each time I tune in, I can now tell whether its mom or dad on the nest. Even saw a still-alive fish in the nest today. I love these guys!

  • Laadyb

There are now a whole group of eagle watchers where I work. We are constantly IMing each other with updates and “Did you see…?” remarks. I live in California where they have been promoting the Catalina eagle cams but they can’t hold a candle to this one for clarity and nearness to the family. Way to go, Bob!!!

  • barbara

@Betsyburton I think it says somewhere on this page that the night camera is infrared and can’t be seen by the eagles.

  • colette

It’s infrared! I worry about the buzzing noise……do they have to hear it?

  • Appleiva

There’s a road at the top of the screen. If you watch you can see small vehicles sometimes.

  • Hyydywy793

Will the eagle couple have more babies next year to watch?? Magical. Thanks !!

  • Narq6656

I am confused, i saw the baby hatch yesterday ( April 7th ) morning around 7:30ish but it said the baby hatched on the 6th. When they say it hatched does it mean when the egg crackes because it was cracked on the 6th.

  • Hlhamp1

Both birds are in that same tree most of the time they only leave to drink and eat then bring some food back to the nest, they are very protective of the young ,I wouldnt advise anything or anyone going near the nest

  • Hlhamp1

There is a really nice stream running just under the nest and being that close to the fish hatchery i would think food would be plentyfull

Not sure why this discussion board is not in chronological order, but it sure would make it easer to figure out what is going on in some temporal order. Not trying to be picky as this is an awesome site, but putting comments in order of time and date received, and also haveing some professional moderation to some of the questions would really help the educational value.

    how long is that nest

  • Memphis

There’s no way that the nest weighs 1.5 tons!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001908111740 Arthur Killings

    Cool.

  • Cinder

I am addicted! Can’t turn it off, will never get anythin done today. Oh well

  • Niamtu

My bad, how do you do that? Also, it appears that several people (including myself) thought one of the chicks we missing or rejected. Yesterday, most of the day I could only see two and I was afraid that the mother dispatched a weak one or something similar. I am happy to see I and others were mistaken, everybody is present!

  • Haley

What happened to the other parent?? Earlier, the babies were all by themselves. Did one possibly die?

  • Haley

5-6 feet across, about the same deep; it weighs about 1½ tons.

  • shawn sami

the 1 guy looks like hes gonna fall out of the nest

  • David

Sometimes, I’ve noticed, the babies will be briefly left by themselves while the parents trade off on caretaking duties.

  • David

I know. This has been must-see-TV around our house for a week, now! My 5-year-old LOVES it!

  • sam

i feel bad for the one on the right it gets beat up by the one in the middle

how can we tell mommy from daddy

  • Ajrcw

what are the two black dots on the females head I’m assuming this is the female now.

  • Anonymous

    Hi

  • rotifer46

First thing the 2 yr old grandchild wanted this AM was to see the Moma and babies

  • Bpshort from Idaho

Yippee, the third one just appeared. Was getting a little worried. This is the best thing to watch. I am just amazed by this.

  • David

Yeah, the middle one IS a bit of a bully. My wife calls him Domino (as in Dominant).

  • David

The female is bigger than the male and the male’s head is sleeker. That’s him feeding the babies, now.

  • David

Dad, please get off my head!

  • Stephangelos

I’m really concerned that he’s not caring for the weaker one.

  • Stephangelos

Well maybe it’s okay. Took my eyes off the little bugger for a few mintues and now he’s lively.

  • David

I was worried about that one, too. That’s the one who hatched out late because his/her egg wasn’t laid until early March (the other two were laid in late February). He/she just needs to catch up with the other two.

  • Jferguson1229

what is wrong with the little one? Mother is ignoring it

  • David

OK, dad, spread the food around some. Two other eaglets in the nest, you know.

  • Ajd

Thanks for all the wonderful comments everyone. I have not been able to check in on the family for a couple of days. After reading all the comments I feel I am all caught up.

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Also, the ridge above Dad’s (Edgar) eyes only goes as far back as his eyes, while Mom’s (Molly) goes all the way back to her ears almost. These guys are my favorite obsession!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

I call them Einee, Meanee and Minee……cuz they didn’t want no mo! Mom is Molly and Dad is Edgar around our house!

  • debbie Hersko

Love this so much, my housework shows it !

  • Joann262

could you zoom back out please

  • David

Thanks, Crazy Bird Lady! I didn’t know their names. One thing I also learned is that Molly has a longer beak, from top to chin, than Edgar.

  • Appleiva

I thought the same thing. Niamtu the youngest is still very weak. The parents seem to sense that it is slow going for Little One. They feed but I fear rejection on their part.

  • Randy

Is the one little eagle ok? It looked weak and the mother didn’t seem to be feeding it? This is amazing to watch.

  • Janieb1230

I feel privileged to be able to watch this. I’m still trying to think of adequate words to express my amazement and wonder…

  • barbara

I’m concerned about that eaglet. Mom or Dad (I’m not sure which is which) spent a long time feeding them a while ago. At first that one was getting ignored, but then Parent Eagle tried several times to feed it, but it just couldn’t seem to grab the food. Its eyes don’t have much spark, and I noticed it was lying there while the other two were getting fed a little while ago. I hope it’ll be OK. Every now and then it shows some spark. I know the weak ones don’t always make it, and such is the way of nature, but it would be hard to see this one not make it, as we’ve all gotten so attached.

  • rebekah

this is my new favorite reality show! :D

  • Sabercat600

Believe it or not, only about 12-15 lbs. They’re all feathers! When you see them up close you are sure they weigh 35-40 lbs but not so.

  • Sabercat600

Saw mom bring a dead rabbit today – actually had to look away when she started tearing into it. The past few days, she seemed to be a little impatient while feeding the little guys. Seemed like the dad was better at it but she was really persistant today making sure the littlest dude (or dudette) was getting his/her fair share. I don’t think I’ve ever been so hooked on anything on the internet!

  • rebekah

I know! It all seems a little unfair or neglectful sometimes but somehow they all seem to manage. It’s funny to see how all of us want to step in and do it our way! LOL This is such a special opportunity to be a part of this. I am HOOKED too :D

  • Appleiva

Now, it’s 10:10 pm EST USA 4-9-11 Weather warnings for humans. Mamma bird is allowing the first camp out (that I know of) for her babes.

  • Janieb1230

I feel like we’ve formed or own little community on this page; an amazing experience all the way around!!

  • David

I know, Barbara. I feel the same way. The eaglet you’re referring to hatched out about a week later than the other two (his/her egg was laid last) so I’m hoping that’s the reason he/she is a little lethargic at times.

  • David

    Ditto! :)

  • David

Agreed. It’s been really cool watching this and sharing it with other folks!

  • Kerry, Sydney Australia

This is beautiful…. thank you for allowing to watch!

  • tom

sure looks tired. what did they eat today

  • David

    Fish and rabbit, I think.

  • Niknar13

I noticed that she was sitting back and not on them where she usually is. Wonder why?

  • Bojoy1

What is with the open mouth breathing ?

  • Spence Nikki

I live in the area and it has been much warmer here today and tonight. Today reached nearly 90 degrees, whereas it has only been around 50-60, at the most, the last few days. I wonder if that is why she doesn’t have the little ones in the cup.

  • cat

I feel so very blessed to be a part of this and get to watch this!! It truly is AMAZING!! What great parents and such beautiful babies!! Thanks again for letting all of us be part of this!! This is just not something you get to see on a daily basis!!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

My birds will breathe like that when it’s warm. Might also be why the babes are sleeping out tonight. She might be a little dehydrated too.

  • Victor William

We are in our 60tees and still learning. It is fantastic that we have lived long enough to appreciate this event. We are watching form Adelaide Australia.

  • castle26

We have a computer hooked up to our TV so now all we watch all day is the “eagle channel” lol This has been a wonderful experience. We also keep the eagle cam up on my computer at school all day in my PreK class. The students go to the computer throughout the day to check on “our eagles” It is so cute. They get so excited when the babies are being fed. It is so nice to see their little faces light up as they watch nature in action.

  • deb3rd

We are watching this in my third grade class on a huge screen. The kids love it. They went home and showed their parents. Of course I have to turn it off to do some teaching. Perhaps I should get an eagle costume.

  • Bingo

    Can the babies see yet?

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Yum! Fresh duck for breakfast. Edgar sure is a prolific hunter! I think, next to the eagles themselves, my favorite part of this is being able to hear what the eagles hear. The dogs barking, horns honking and people talking…..it’s like were right there with em’!

  • Peter Eagle

Looks like she needs a maid to help her clean up :)

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Seriously, right? Can you imagine the smell?

  • Tedyog

is there only 2 babies now..

  • Mxmom7678

This is just glorious. I feel so blessed to witness this.

  • Tedyog

sorry I see the three now

  • Appleiva

Mama’s cleaning house today and digging up old meals from under the nest. Expanding the perimeter in the play pen.

  • Pam

    AMAZING…….. What a wonderful experience.

  • Appleiva

Weather channel has storms coming in Minnesota and it looks like the northern part of iowa where our bird’s live. Looks like the parents sense it’s coming and digging a deeper hole for the e-lets.

  • Appleiva

This is the longest I have seen both parents on the nest and the wind is getting stronger.

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Molly is such a good Mom! When Dad’s in charge, the chicks are everywhere. Five minutes after Mom gets home, she’s got them all corraled back into the play pen! You go girl!

  • Anonymous

We’ve been watching for a few days now, too. Are there still 3 Eaglets in the nest??? I just thought I only saw two.

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Yep, although the youngest isn’t under Mom right now……he/she’s just above Mom’s head.

  • Anonymous

phew…thanks. We are getting attached to the little guys. :)

  • David

Isn’t that always the way? LOL!

  • David

Definitely! I was freaking, a little, earlier today when I only saw two of the eaglets.

  • David

That branch is REALLY rocking, right now. Hoping and praying the family makes it through the upcoming bad weather ok!

  • ajoo123

It went offline, hope the birdies are okay

  • Dampethewolf

aww poor cute egales are getting wet by the rain!!!!

  • Sabercat600

The wind seems to be rocking the nest. Do any of you live near there and know what the weather is?

  • Sabercat600

Plus, Edgar looks really nervous in the wind.

  • Annodmm76

I understand!!! I teach K and we watch off and on all day!! They love it. We write a sentence each morning, facts about eagles. Nationwide should watch. What an opportunity to witness real life nature of such a majestic bird.

  • Mimoo

Is it my computer or is the view fuzzy

  • Michelle_27kc

Thank you for letting us be a part of this it is beautiful

  • David

    True that!

  • David

    True that!

  • Greerfam1

    its rocking bad some time

  • David

    Dad’s on the nest, now.

  • David

    Dad’s on the nest, now.

  • debbie Hersko

What a wonderful family. I have been praying for them all day.

  • barbara

I was in Dubuque this weekend and drove back to Minneapolis this afternoon. I actually went past Decorah, thinking of “our” birds, of course.. Weather was fine then (about 3 p.m., I think) but you could see storm clouds coming in. On the radio they said there’s a tornado watch for SE Minn and the adjoining part of Iowa. (Doesn’t mean a tornado has been spotted — just that conditions are ripe.) I suppose eagles must be used to this, but it still makes me nervous and I’ll be relieved when it’s calm again. Sounds like the chicks would like to come out, but Mom is wisely staying on top of them!

  • Jackson Family

we need to keep praying for this blessing of nature, it is so incredible to watch, thank you to all who make this possible.

  • Rainy_jean

    this is so awesome

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Weather channel says 63*, with winds gusting up to 30 mph. It’s looks colder than 63 to me???? Molly can handle it! (I hope)

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Yeah, but to be fair…she just told him to sit on the nest. She said nothing about keeping the chicks IN the nest! LOL!

  • Sabercat600

Thanks for the update. Now that Molly is on the nest, she looks a little more calm about it but boy, it is really blowing. Earlier today when Edgar was on the nest he really looked like he was scouting out alternative sites. I was so afraid he’d take one baby and leave the others. I didn’t think they’d last in the nest until he or Molly got back. I’m glad to see they are “riding out the storm”. I need to sign off and just hope they’ll all be fine until morning. Good night little birds!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

That was a HUGE fish Edgar just dropped off. He’s such a good provider for our little family!

  • barbara

How long can this storm go on? Hasn’t it been *hours*?

  • David

I missed where he dropped it but he is a good hunter, for sure!

  • Johns

For those interested in this pair’s early history, here is a link to a PBS documentary from 2008 that tells their story along with providing a lot of interesting Bald Eagle facts:

    http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/american-eagle/video-full-episode/4349/

It’s nice to see how much the female has improved in her parenting. =o)

  • Antonia0619

    I am addicted!

  • David

Looks like she has a handle on it, so far.

  • David

Looks like she has a handle on it, so far.

  • jc

I hope you guys will get through the storm ok.

  • Carissa

o0o0o man she is looking a little flustered and i hope that they are gonna be ok if it keeps this up all night!!!!!! she seems like she knows what to do so that makes me feel better

  • Peter

omg, I feel so bad for them, I want to take them in my home

  • Carissa

me too im scard that the nest is gonna go flying ughhhhhhh

  • barbara

How long can a storm go on?!?! It’s relentless!

  • Pam

Hang in there little mama. Pam in Seattle.

  • Irelandvc

Decorah is supposed to have wind gusts up to 40 miles. Mom has turned her back to the wind and it keeps blowing her tail up almost over her head. What a night! Hope it doesn’t blow a baby out of the nest!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Took me a minute to figure out what I was looking at when I logged on. NOT her best side!

  • Lorraine

I’m in Australia and all I get to see is the eagles sleeping! Maybe if I stay up all night I might get to see the babies in the daylight? It’s 3.30pm here so would love to know what time it is there now?

  • tommy

some one is going to need a nap tomorrow. beside me watching her geting windswped at130am

  • Kerry

Hi Lorraine, I’m in Sydney watching this. Have a look about 9:30 pm …. it’s just dawn over there then, breakfast is delivered and the chicks are fed ….. wonderful!

  • Avelino

This is the most wonderfull thing nature has to offer, watching the baby eagles groing up,fantastic and well done to all envolved. AUSTRALIA

  • Wendy B

Thanks Johns for the great link to the PBS Nature program!! Amazing!! I was so sad when his first wife died, but he moved on as we all must do.
When the new couple were rebuilding the nest, got a kick out of how he would rearrange every stick and clump of grass she placed :)

  • barbara

Welcome, Aussies :) So cool that people are watching all over the world. When my daughter studied in Australia a few years ago, her favorite Australian creature was the wedge-tailed eagle.

  • Kris

They all survived the storm! Some humans could stand a lesson from these eagles about protecting and keeping their kids safe…hope they’re watching too!

  • Kris

They all survived the storm! Some humans could stand a lesson from these eagles about protecting and keeping their kids safe…hope they’re watching too!

    3rd one hatched days ago

    my votes
    1st baby – uno
    2nd baby – betwixt
    3rd baby – Finale

  • Sabercat600

Frankly, I think Molly is the better hunter. But so glad they are both good providers. Now that’s what I call parenting! As other bloggers have mentioned, many people should take a cue from these two. It just doesn’t get any better than this!

  • Lls683

How does the camera gets it’s power?

  • Sabercat600

So glad to see the nest in tact this morning. Everyone looks relieved. I was worried about that darn storm. The news from other parts of Iowa this weekend wasn’t so good. Haven’t had a chance to look up where exactly Decorah is in relation to the little town that was so badly damaged. Molly & Edgar did a good job keeping their home & family safe!

  • Tom krzciok

Does the youngest one ever get fed?

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

My votes were Einee, Meanee and Minee…..cuz they didn’t want no Mo! But your names are much classier! :)

  • Tina

Must be or it wouldn’t be alive. It probably doesn’t need as much food as its older siblings.

That being said, it seems like there is a food shortage this morning – the pantry looks empty.

  • rebekah

Well I am so happy to see the outcome to that dramatic part of this “reality show” from yesterday/last nights wind and rain has a good ending….whew! I think we would all need therapy if the nest had fallen!!!! Those eagles are awesome architects!

  • Rawrz

1st Baby – Liberty (This name was J Esbenshade’s idea)
2nd Baby – Mezzo (This name was Jzdolphinluv933′s idea)
3rd Baby – Little Abe (Abraham Lincoln) (This was my Idea)

If you like these names Like this Message (:

  • Anonymous

Seems to me the oldest one is a bully and pecks the others when they raise their heads up for food. I get so tense worrying about the little one. But I guess everything is as it is supposed to be. Anyway, what do we know?

  • Gailstevenson

I am also an Aussie, i live in the USA, what part of Aust are you from, where i live is 14 hours behind Melb

  • Gailstevenson

Hi Barbara, the Wedge Tail Eagle is the largest Eagle in the world and can have a wing span of 7 feet, amazing creatures. I have been watching these eagle for weeks now and i am also watching the ones at Virginia, they are a lot bigger and such fun to watch

  • barbara

I feel exactly the same. I get tense watching the little one in back straining to get its head in position for food and getting ignored, so that I am trying to talk to the parent eagle through the computer screen! But, as you say, what do we know? These eagles have been at it a long time. And as someone said, it must be getting *some* food, as it’s still alive.

  • Vleatherow

Deb, You’re a good teacher. How often will those kids ever see such a miracle as this site. You are instilling in them love of nature and God’s creations.

  • Gailstevenson

Has anyone see the eaglet 3 today

  • Kris

He’s there…one of them stays under quite a bit.

  • Janieb1230

Our babies are growing up!! Would anyone be interested in going the the Center???

  • Peter Nashua,Nh.

    wow it is windy today!!!
would be great to have a wind meter and a temp reading
    She is a trooper

  • Dottie

I have been watching since day one…..but, now a little concerned….have only seen one Eagle and no food being brought in by the other Eagle since early early this a.m…….I’m getting worried, can anyone help me calm down…or is there a problem?

  • Johns

I’ve seen both adults today, but neither seems to have been successful at finding food. Mom was picking at leftovers early in the morning, trying to feed the babies, but only came up with enough for the biggest chick. Since then, I’ve seen both adults dig out food from under the grass in the nest, so maybe there’s more than we think. But I do wonder if the storm could somehow have interfered with the eagles’ regular food sources?

  • Vleatherow

I live in Ohio and have the weather channel. Yesterday I knew storms were heading to Minn.& Iowa. I call them Betsy and Ross. ha They both knew that something was in the air in the am and started rearranging the nest. The 1st time I’ve seen the parents working together to make a deep cup to place their e-lets into safety, like go to the basement if a tornado is coming?! It was not windy in Iowa at that point in time. Natural instinct is an amazing thing to watch.

  • Dottie

the little ones have not been fed lately, where is the other Eagle?

  • Kimjerry

Has the father been seen today? I saw that mom left earlier to get breakfast, which scared me to think that the chicks were so vulnerable…does anyone know??

  • Romap1

There only seems like there are two babies now. What happened to the third?

  • Maj1220

I saw one of the babies pecking it…it’s laying down.

  • Maj1220

    I see three now…one was napping…now it’s up.

  • Caroll29

I that the father or mother on the nest right now?

  • S Bucci

Does anyone know how often eaglets are fed? I keep missing feeding time.

  • Peter Nashua,Nh.

she feeds them often, but not for long maybe 5 min.

  • Janieb1230

    Our babies are growing up!

  • Vleatherow

Dear John, Thank you for posting the the PBS site for the background of this couples history! I so enjoyed it. Hope more than I read your post. She was young and he’s had a sad history. He had to teach her.

  • Aldenhaslwanter199

im 11 and i stillwent “AWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!”

  • Michelle_27kc

well is that the Mother or Father on the nest right now? anybody know?

  • Janieb1230

I was watching the mother (I think) last night. She had her eyes open for a few minutes, then closed them and went to sleep. After a few minutes the started to lean to the left and she abruptly woke up: “I’m awake! I’m awake!” and then the whole scene played over and over.

  • S Bucci

Very windy again today, hope all is well in the nest. Wonder if there is another storm coming.

  • Carissa

any food today????? hope the dads ok and looking

  • Carissa

ayayayayay looks like he brought some fish woohoooo

  • Caroll29

Just saw the other parent drop food off and left again. so we all can relax, both parents are alright.

  • Johns

Here is a great youtube video showing the parents side by side and pointing out the differences:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lARYcL5A50

I usually look at the brow which is much longer on mom, the grey area behind her eye (which dad doesn’t have) and where their beaks start (mom’s start’s at the back of the eye, dad’s in the middle).

  • Spaybg

My husband got very few papers graded this weekend as he was turned into the eagle’s. He monitored the weather channel worried about their weather. It is hard to teach while turning in to the tree!

  • Christy

What did the dad drop off? I missed it.

  • Caroll29

    a fish

  • Michelle_27kc

I am sad the eagle is not feeding the small one

  • Carissa

does any ones eles see that shes not feeding the smallest one y???

  • Christy

i see it and it just makes me cry. It tries so hard and begs and begs to get food and it doesn’t get fed.

  • Michelle_27kc

yes I did I don’t think it’s to doing to well very sad

  • Carissa

thats weired and now shes done hmmmm poor baby

  • LSwit

Eaglets just got fed but the smallest got left out. I hope that one survives. That is so sad.

  • jeneli

Why would she not feed the littlest one? It seems very eager and hungry.

  • barbara

Me, too. That frustrates me. The little one is trying so hard!

  • Patsy Wainscott

I’ve enjoyed watching these is babies hatch. Very loving mother and father. Why does she not feed the last baby very often?. It looks like it’s so weak.

  • Kris

I saw the little one get fed this afternoon.

  • David

Dad just dropped off another fish.

  • Ljcarrifee

Soooo worried about little one I read on another site that when 3 eggs hatch that it isn’t uncommon for third it to be killed by older eaglets, especially if oldest is female. Parents dont’t do anything to stop larger eaglets from killing smallest. This is just amazing. I will say a prayer for the little one.

  • Big mama

i totally agree – far better than what’s on cable. if that nest would have fallen in the storm i would have been a mess!

  • Tmess223

I am hoping the little one needs less food, I was begging Momma through the screen to give him/her some. dad dropped off a still live fish a few minutes ago.

  • barbara

Thanks for posting that, Johns. That was really helpful. Now I don’t feel so much in the dark as to which is which.

  • Anonymous

I am so worried about the little one. I can’t stand to see it beg for a bite and continually be ignored. I am in tears…….

  • Aldenhaslwanter199

    eat it

  • Chapru

The little one is eating like a horse now.

  • Aldenhaslwanter199

    “Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.”

  • LSwit

Feeding time again and the little one is getting fed…I feel better now.

  • Michelle_27kc

Well that makes me feel so much better that the little one got to eat

  • Tmess223

The lil one finally got some breakfast..I can sleep now :) Mamma even went over the oldest head to make sure lil one got some!

  • Kris

He got his fill this time! Maybe the other two do need more.

  • jeneli

    Your prayer must have helped.

  • Dottie

another fish!! wow!! what a hunter !!!!

  • Michelle_27kc

    Fathers turn lol

  • Chapru

I’m sure they do because they are so much bigger. I’ll give the smaller one this; it was aggressive and climbed over the bigger ones to get it’s share. I was amazed at the size pieces it gulped.

  • rebekah

I know!! I am so glad for that posting as well….I feel like a pro now knowing Molly and Edgar!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

They say the first step is to admit that you have a problem, so here goes: Hello, my name is Cathy and I’m addicted to the Decorah Eagles!

I just can’t stop watching Molly, Edgar and the chicks!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Was that a full possum Molly just pulled out from under the grass? Emergency rations? WTH?

  • Michelle_27kc

Yes I think I am too

  • Janieb1230

Does anybody know if eagles mate for life?? I love seeing them in the nest together.

  • Myriam70

Mom and dad are in the nest :)

  • David

    I KNOW I’m addicted! LOL!

  • David

I’ve never seen both parents together at the nest for this long at a time, before. Plus, they’re both hyper-vigilant as if something has them spooked.

  • David

I think the little one is a male because of the size difference. I call him the ‘little man’. Glad to see him getting more proactive at feeding time!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

I was thinking the same thing, David. They seem real edgy. Calm before the storm? I’m gonna pop over to the weather channel.

  • appleiva

David, John’s PBS network site is a must see in order to understand the old man and his young bride.

  • David

I read that as well, Lj and have also been praying for the little one. Plus, I really don’t want to have to try and explain it to my 5 year-old daughter, who has fallen in love with this family, if something should happen to the little guy.

  • Big mama

I’m so happy to have found this page – i’m not alone in my obsession with these birds! and everything i’m thinking, someone else seems to be thinking also. Like. . . i’m addicted to this page. . .they haven’t both been together (in camera view) this long before. . .they both sense something unusual because they are usually settling down by now

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Weather is good. Calm winds. Mild temps. Hmmm….

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Welcome to our own little 12 step program….we’re here for the next 12 months! LOL!

  • Michelle_27kc

Welcome to you and enjoy it is the best thing ever

  • rebekah

I agree!!! I had posted this is my new” reality show” !!! This is so cool. ;)

  • David

Yes, they do. If something happens to one mate or they have problems producing offspring (NOT an issue with this pair as this is their 4th clutch) they’ll find another mate.

  • Michelle_27kc

    WOW somethings going on????

  • barbara

:: raising my hand :: Me, too. I am getting nothing done!

  • barbara

Yes, I believe they do, “till death do they part,” and then the remaining bird will find a new mate.

  • David

They seem to have settled back into routine, now, Cathy. Good to hear that they won’t have to worry about bad weather, tonight.

  • barbara

Yeah, what’s that howling? Maybe whatever it is is what’s got them on alert. (Wolf, coyote, dog??)

  • appleiva

Had our taxes done today. One lady has the Eagle channel running all day long !! to all of you that think ur addicted..believe me you are not alone and praying for this family of ours ! I’m in Ohio, USA

  • Ooh Ooh Nana

Addicted in South Dakota….there goes spring cleaning!

  • Michelle_27kc

yes I hear a dog not to sure but it is sure something just hope this will be ok

  • Michelle_27kc

lol Ya not much getting done here in Ontario Canada but this is just the best thing who needs cable

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Two of my parrots are in the EXACT same position Molly is in right now. Head tucked into wing and sleeping soundly. It comforting to know she’s finally at peace this evening. Rest well pretty girl!

  • rebekah

I suppose it’s more like eagles being eagles and well, we just got here :)

  • webhw

Wow! The eagle is doing great!

  • kagni

There seems to be light on.
Can the eagles sleep with the light on?

  • Showme

Where does the male go at night? I assume nearby, but I’ve read that eagle pairs will sleep in a nest together, but does that not apply when there are eaglets present?

  • Showme

Not a light but infrared camera that “sees” in the dark by detecting heat.

  • Johns

This female is actually this particular male’s second (at least) mate.

  • Neldaphillips60

I think that is the most beautiful thing you can watch.I see Bald Eagles everyday where I live. Love to watch them catch and eat thier find.

  • Obxlisa

Watching from coastal NC. Very interesting! Looks like the babies grew overnight! They seemed so much stronger today…and their eyes look so bright! I have been worried about the little one, but he seems better today too! Fascinating! Can’t believe it’s 3:00 in the morning and over 40000 people are online watching eagles sleep!

  • Christy

Hey, what kind of parrots do you have? I have a cockatoo and an african gray. They are adorable.

  • TB

We have it on several computers at the school I work at. In Kindergarten, the students read a book and then wrote a book called, ” Our Non-Fiction Book About Eagles”. Talk about a teachable moment. This has spawnded a slew of lessons. Love this site!!!

  • TB

oops typo :( (spawned not spawnded)

  • Anonymous

WOW, so heartwarming to see mom and dad together, feeding the babies from both sides of the nest this morning. What a great way to start the day!

  • Kiwitess

What’s wrong with the little guy? Not hungry? All “kids” are hungry. Hope he/she is okay.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ritambhara-Marylee-Tyson/1521001193 Ritambhara Marylee Tyson

At one point last night both parents were asleep in the nest. So sweet.

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Hi Christy. We have a grey, a ducorp cockatoo, a sun conure and we just got a baby macaw. We love our birds, and have a large aviary in the center of our home and out back, so they’re indoor/outdoor…..cuts way down on cage cleaning, since I spend all my time with the eagles now!!!

  • Kiwitess

Aw – they have their mom’s “nose!”

  • Showme

I’m afraid it looks like it is too weak to get up to eat.

  • Mona

i keep rooting for the little guy to wake up!

  • Kiwitess

Okay, I’m good. The little dude is up and hungry! Thank you to the camera operator – I can’t get enough of this family!!

  • Mona

    YAY!!!! he’s awake!

  • Showme

As soon as I posted this, it got up– and got a few bites at least.

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Did anyone catch the owl attack last night at about 2am? It’s posted at You Tube.

See David, we weren’t imagining it when we thought Molly and Edgar were acting strange last night!

  • sonia anway

Thank you so much ,what a beautiful sight the eagles family is and educational ,i have been concerned about the little runt he doesn’t seem to get fed like the other two ,i hope he/she will make it .
    Sonia

  • Showme

    Can you post the link?

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Oh, now you’re asking a lot…given my computer skills! Let me get one of the kids to do it. Hold tight.

  • 3rd grade PBCSD teacher

I introduced this site to my 3rd graders, and we are all in love! Every free moment, I am asked, “Can we watch the eagles?” In the morning, at least 3 or 4 of my students come in asking if I saw what the eagle did last night, followed by a summary. This site is truly awesome!

  • Ooh Ooh Nana

Life in the wild is hard and the fight to survive has to be strong. The little one needs to learn to fight for his/her food. In my observations, the parents don’t/can’t make it easy. Survival of the fittest is a hard concept for me – for all of us here, probably.

  • Showme

    Actually I found it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZk7K3ICzM8
Hoots at 4:25 and again about 4:50, if this was indeed an owl. Obviously there was something threatening.

  • Gailstevenson

It may look that the 3rd eaglet is not getting enough but it is, these birds are the most nurturing parents

  • Janieb1230

I watching Dad feed the babies and Mom suddenly swooped into the next. What grace and beauty! I sat with my jaw open. I’m reluctant to go anywhere because all I want to do is watch this!

  • eaglemania

oh wow, that was awesome…I could even hear the owl

  • appleiva

When I viewed the PBS. I understood the male much better thanks to you. He sure has had a job raising his new wife hasn’t he? The natural instinct to these creatures is a wonder to behold. They worked together on the nest the day before the storm & dug their e-lets a deep cellar to go to be protected. I had the weather channel they could sense it coming like we can smell a storm in the air.

  • appleiva

For those of you that are still worried about the “little one” view the PBS site that John has posted. One of the nests has a “little one” that was tagged Under Dog. ha Just see how UnderDog glides when he finally grows up. I’m 62 yrs. and remember watching the cartoon with my children !!!

  • Sabercat600

I just watched the youtube clip from last night’s owl attack. I’m surprised we don’t see a dead owl in the nest this morning. That apparently wasn’t a smart owl. Who in their right mind would attack a nest w/ the Mom & Dad Eagles sitting in it? Like the rest of you, I just can’t get enough of these guys. What are we going to do when the babes have all “flown the coup”? Fortunately we have a little time yet. Absolutely love these guys!

  • eaglemania

wish I could tie a string on big eaglets leg….I get so worried the closer it gets to the edge :(

  • LSwit

What do eagles and the eaglets do for water, it looks like they are panting. If anyone knows the answer to this please answer.

  • barbara

When they fly the coop, we will all suffer from “empty nest syndrome”!

  • Johns

I’ve read on another website that eagles rarely drink – they get their moisture from their prey.

  • eagle watching grandma

I watch this every morning with my grandson, 8 years old, before he gets on the school bus. he prefers this to cartoons in the morning. we can’t get enough.

  • koalaguy69

these koalas are so magnificennt, great marsupiols

For the “other” eagle cam and a glimpse of what they’ll look like in a few weeks – these are older.

  • Rnmom508

How does an eaglet not fall out of the nest?

  • appleiva

Yes they do but our fella here lost his first wife and this is his second.

  • Easty

What are all the animals that have accumulated in the nest??

  • imspncycl

Does anybody else worry when the babies are left alone?

  • Easty

    This is a first as far as I’m concerned;
“Mama” left the nest and the babies are exposed for any other predator to come along and help themselves to. Scary! She left them all alone. :-(

  • imspncycl

I think those are for snacking.

  • Showme

Just because the eagles aren’t in the camera view doesn’t mean they aren’t nearby – remember this is a very narrow view of the surroundings.

  • Guest

    saw that too

  • Guest

    what are the parents names?

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Edgar sure doesn’t like flies, does he? He acts just like my dog when she’s down at the barn with me! Snap, snap, snapping at them constantly!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

So crazy! We live out in the stix and I was awakened by an owl hooting last night, too. Good God, am I channeling the eagles? LOL!

  • Michelle_27kc

O I thought that wA MOM LOL

  • worried

It looks like the smallest baby doesn’t get enough food. Worried

  • Trahut

Is there anyone out there that is keeping a log of some sort? It would be great to have some input from an expert on their development, survival odds, behavior. I watch them every day and really don’t know much about Bald Eagles besides they’re endangered & our national symbol.

  • Gailstevenson

i think this parent is young, she does not seem to have the skills like others i have seen, the babies, #1 eaglet is on the other side of the nest and the other 2 are very close to the edge, it is a bit worrying

  • Freedomdt

What about the eaglet at the bottom of the picture? will they continue to feed it?

  • Sabercat600

I my gosh, is the third baby dying?

  • Beachingirl2005

finally she is showing him some attention…and feeding him! Good Mommy!

  • eaglemania

actually, I think a bungie cord would be better :) )

  • Guest

actually I think someone said the names are Edgar & Molly

  • Guest

1st baby – Liberty (free from other babies)
2nd baby – Lucy (cute name)
    3rd baby – Kennedy (John F. Kennedy – President of U.S., Eagle = u.s. national symbol
Like message if you like the names

  • Pahac

I have been worried all afternoon that she is not feeding the smaller one. Is this what happens?

  • rebekah

I hope that hole where the babies are laying isn’t as big as it looks :/

  • eaglemania

oh I know!!! I will have to find another web cam!!

  • Llisa_mclain

the little ones are so close to the edge of the nest ! I am so worried I can hardly watch !

  • sz

In the info part of this page it says this is their 4th year raising young

  • Tibeachpatrol

the parents are Martha and Alfred, and the children (in order of birth) are Bob, Ron and Ralph :)

  • Johns

I was going to say the same thing – this is an experienced couple, they are on their forth clutch, not having lost a single chick so far. I think they are doing what they need to do: They are feeding everyone as much as they need to be fed, and they are allowing their chicks to exercise. Personally, I think they are doing an awesome job.

  • Tmess223

I think the itty bitty (last hatched) was one of two that was in the back close to the edge. Yesterday the camera was panned to show that the branches reach a little higher than the babies can climb over. The lil one has eaten really well tonight. I was a bit worried the one towards the front was not doing well but mom fed him/her and seems to really be ok…

  • rebekah

This being my first nest viewing (constantly), I find this to be one of the most wonderful, and one of the most stressfull events I have ever been a part of! I am so in awe of God’s creation of instinct. I am also so captivated on the viewers and their comments. We are all here, none of us really knowing one another, and sharing love. Wow, I’m inspired.

  • Big mama

i was thinking the same thing about that one toward the front, but all seems well and everyone appears to be getting dinner now!

  • Big mama

I totally agree with you! i have to minimize (but never turn off) the screen because i am afraid something will happen to those babies!! sometimes i can’t bear it. now if everyone on each side of a disagreement could be required to watch an hour of this together, some how i think the differences could be resolved.

  • Big mama

everyone fed and tucked in for an early evening nap.

  • Michelle_27kc

Mom looks very happy right now

  • J1u2n3i42000

Is it me, or does the largest one look totally different right now, darker color down, way biggerr – could he changed that much in 1 day?

  • David

Hopefully, daddy eagle jacked that owl up good!

  • David

So it would seem, Cathy. That video was intense. Good thing is the babies slept through most of it.

  • Peter Nashua,Nh.

OMG she looks so peacefull when she is asleep, yet still so aware of her young

  • Peter Nashua,Nh.

I would like to THANK everyone involved who has allowed me to view this.this is almost like sitting in the nest with them

  • Flower

Is mother eagle okay, she is breathing through her mouth and kind of gulps sometimes like she has something stuck in her throat?

  • rebekah

the parents are Edgar and Molly

  • Jbone298

if anyone can help, how come at night there seems to be only one adult at the nest? where does the other one hang out when it’s dark?

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

    Amen to that, Big Mama!

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Wow! It’s not just you…he looks way bigger than when I checked in on them at noon. He is ususally first in line for the chow line so I guess it’s paying off!

  • barbara

I’ve read that they open their mouths to cool off. It was pretty warm there today, but cool air is coming in.

  • barbara

Someone said that the other one sits on a nearby branch.

  • appleiva

There is a large branch right above the nest were the male perchest. It faces the hatchery farm and the small river below.

  • appleiva

I’m a 62 yr old woman from Ohio. EST You have such joy in life! Nice to have met you Crazy.

  • appleiva

This is my first time to view inside an eagle’s nest too. Just to watch nature and it’s natural instinct is quite amazing.

  • Gary

I sent my grandson a link to the site and told him that the birds names are Fred, Ethel, Hughie, Dewie and Louie.

  • Flower

Is Mrs Eagle okay, she is breathing through her mouth a lot and appears to try to swallow from time to time as if something is caught in her throat?

  • Gailstevenson

The parents are very aware of where the eaglets are and as they get bigger and more active the parents will build the nest up at the edges so they will not fall, these parents are very smart and caring they will not let anything happen to there babies

  • Gailstevenson

her mouth is open because she is cooling off, it is normal for eagles to open there mouths when they are hot

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

Did you guys see the look on Molly’s face when Edgar came back? She was, like, “Really…Squirrel again Dear?” Made me laugh!

  • sz

The male brought in a squirrel and the mom fed the eye to a baby. She then got busy stripping the tail fur off to use in the nest.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CRIJNEY3Q27XPWZ2Q2O6JE44N4 Timothy

first time I have seen the babys home alone while both parents are away looking for food.

  • David

    LOL!

  • David

One of them was very likely on a branch, overlooking the nest that we can’t see on camera. I’ve seen the babies alone in the nest before but only briefly.

  • rebekah

you are right…I can see that happening :)

  • Gail Stevenson

your right David there is always one nearby and as you said the parent will be on a branch close by

  • rebekah

Oh that was great to see where papa is sitting! He is so close to the nest keeping an eye. Actually he is on one of the supporting brances of the nest.

  • SLC

Why can’t there be a connection to current temperature & wind somewhere on the website?

  • Kiwitess

Thank you for showing dad again – gosh he’s stunning!!

  • Lynn

I am blaming this Eagle family for not getting my housework done :) Ha.

  • imspncycl

Aren’t those babies too close to the edge of the nest?

  • Anonymous

There is always 1 parent close by usually on a branch out of camera view the babies are never alone

  • Anonymous

  • appleiva

Looks like the babes are starting to molt….growing feathers in and loosing the down. Tha causes the darker color to come on them.

  • appleiva

I missed that crazy but around 8am EST there was an almost live fish floppin’ on the side of the nest! so funny

  • Anonymous

You will see the adults pant too but don’t forget they have over 7000 feathers compared to the eaglets right now.
Feathers protect the bird from the cold as well as the heat of the sun, by trapping layers of air. To maintain its body temperature an eagle simply changes the position of its feathers. While an eagle suns itself on a cold morning, it ruffles and rotates its feathers so that the air pockets are either opened to the air or drawn together to reduce the insulating effect.

  • New Mom again

it’s funny how you start to attribute human like characteristics. i have a new 3 month old…so like the Mama Eagle…i’m tired during the day too. I have loved watching this!!!

  • Sarahtorres

hey this is so cool because she build this nest in 2007 dang it was a long time from her in 20011

  • Easty

You can see these little birds growing! The biggest one is getting darker and you can see the difference at the head, which is white. Also, look at the size of their feet – they’re huge! They just had a feast on a squirrel (I think), so now they’ll go to sleep again for awhile. I don’t like when she leaves the nest and leaves them alone. They could become someone else’s dinner :-(

  • Crazy Bird Lady in AZ

I’ve seen rabbit, possum, crow, duck and even a fox! I do know that eagles will eat roadkill but haven’t seen any tread marks on anything that’s been brought to this nest.

  • Anonymous

Hi Easty, they are not alone, either the Mom or Dad will be on a branch out of camera view, they are never alone

  • stacey

Did the eagle stop feeding one of the babies?
