The 2025 Sustainable Furniture Scorecard
National Wildlife Federation and the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC) released the 2025 Wood Furniture Scorecard. The scorecard sheds light on an industry that is the third-largest consumer of wood worldwide and, when managed irresponsibly, has a disastrous impact on forests, biodiversity, and the communities that depend on these ecosystems.
That is exactly why NWF and SFC are committed to providing this guide to consumers every year. The scorecard compiles essential information about this sector to help consumers make more informed choices and it recognizes and promotes retailers that are genuinely working to do better for the planet.
We evaluate retailers using a detailed methodology and score them on a scale from 0 to 30. The methodology focuses on a set of criteria organized into three categories: responsible wood sourcing policy; responsible sourcing practices and performance; and additional actions, including processes such as obtaining third-party certifications and establishing climate targets.

The Highs and the Lows
This year, we evaluated 111 furniture companies and celebrate those leading the way in responsible wood sourcing. Those who obtained 30 or more points across the three categories earned the Top Score, and those who had 19-29 points earned the High Score. In total, 12 companies earned Top Scores and 16 joined the High Score group.
Top Scores
Like towering sequoias, these retailers rose above the rest, earning the highest marks for their sustainability commitments: Model No., Room & Board, Sonoma Restorations, Sabai Design, MasayaCo, Sea Green Designs, Cisco Home, IKEA, Minted Space, Stoney Creek Furniture, Walter E. Smithe Furniture, and Williams Sonoma Inc.
High Scores
Much like sturdy oaks, these companies have strengthened or expanded their sustainability efforts from previous years, achieving a solid level of responsible performance: Kase Custom, Hoot Judkins, La-Z-Boy, Target, HOM Furniture, LaDiff, re.dwell, Crate & Barrel, Blu Dot, Urban Natural, The Arrangement, Vermont Woods Studio, Ethan Allen, City Furniture, J. Seitz & Co., and Working Wonders.
Laggers
And then we have the saplings—83 companies that still need time and effort to grow. This group includes some well-known furniture retailers, including Belfort Furniture, Costco, Amazon, Furnitureland South, My Bob’s, RC Willey, Wayfair, and Atelier Maison.
While it is encouraging to see this level of consistency and improvement among these leaders, they represent only about 25% percent of all companies assessed. This is an urgent reminder that the furniture industry has more work ahead to ensure responsible wood sourcing becomes the norm, not the exception.
